Holiday Gift Guide: 5 items every amputee needs

fake leg in boot

The holidays are right around the corner…and if you know an amputee they most likely need any number of these items. Or, if you are an amputee, Treat Yoself with any one of these awesome gift ideas!

Shoehorn

I have stuck numerous items into the heel of my shoe in order to slip into anything from tennis shoes to boots! Having an artificial foot makes even the easiest shoes difficult to get into. I have also broken several plastic shoe horns, so metal is key!

SHANTS

Ever notice how you only have an itch you can’t scratch? Whenever I’ve decided to wear pants for the day my residual limb itches all day long. Whenever I’m hiking or biking, or any other sweat-producing activity my leg just slips and slides all over. I have to undress in order to address this issue. Shants would allow me to make a quick transition & adjustment.

Trekking Poles

I am not the most graceful person I know, but when you add the weight of a pack and put me on uneven terrain I fall about every 10 minutes. Once I got trekking poles it made a world of difference.

iWALK2.0

I used to have to stay at home on days that I couldn’t fit into my fake leg because my residual limb was too swollen or sore. Now I can take a day or even a week off of my leg and still make it into work! The iWALK has allowed me to keep moving forward!

Brown Boots

Those brown boots that every basic b*tch wears each fall? Yeah, you can wear them too, even as an amputee! Just get the kind that zips open on the side! It’s also nice for less confident days when you want to hide the leg inside an auto-calf former!

  1. All great ideas for sure. One recent epiphany I had, after dealing with sore skin (especially my fibula head rubbing) for my first 4.5 years is to try Desitin. This stuff is amazing and protects and lubricates your skin all day long. Nothing works better (I tried at least 10-12 different lotions) and it makes a perfect stocking stuffer 🤣👍

      1. Try squirrels nut butter. As a double amputee marathon runner that abuses the prosthetics more than most people I can say it’s the best I have ever used. It’s both an antichafe and an all natural skin healing balm. I have used it for 2 years now and despite running 70+ miles a week, biking 200+ miles a week and everyday life with 3 little kids I haven’t had any skin issues

  2. Awesome post! I have a cousin who is an amputee and she relates to ALL of this! I know what I will be getting for her this Christmas!!

  3. My edc is an allen wrench, antiperspirant, a wash cloth and a 3 ply sock. I sweat to death in the heat so a small wash cloth to dry my stump and my liner then I rub on the antiperspirant. When I sweat I lose volume so this is where my 3 ply sock comes in.

  4. Though I’m a guy, I appreciate a few of these. I bought a long metal shoe horn at Harbor Freight Tools, and has been a real blessing. I’ve always worn boots, so this has been a little challenge. I couldn’t find the lace up boots I wanted, so I settled for a pair with laces AND zippers. I am so glad that was only choice. Without zippers I couldn’t get them on. I also have a pair of Engineer Boots for riding motorcycle. I can’t get right one on. I looked at the pair my Granddaughter has, and they have a side zipper going almost to sole. Now to find someone that can install a zipper. I’ve been using the Desitin already, and like it.
I mentioned boots for motorcycle riding. Last November a car turned in front of me on my motorcycle. I survived. My right lower leg and motorcycle were totaled. I will be riding on a trike soon. I rode 52 years with no major incidents. I’ve been a custom car and motorcycle builder all these years. The trike is just one more.
I may try the trekking poles, because I get a littleboff balance still. I have learned to control most falls.
Thanks for the ideas, and keep posting!

    1. Thank you so much for your comment! So glad you are getting back to what you love 💪 the trekking poles have made a huge difference for me!
